Start with the 10 essentials:
1. raingear or lite rainshell/poncho
2. sun and insect protection- hat, sunscreen and bug repellent
3. flashlight
4. fire starters (matches or hot spark)
5. pocket knife (if you have had a knife safety lecture)
6. compass
7. whistle
8. emergency rations or trail food- gorp, energy bars, things that will travel well
9. personal first aid kit
10. water bottle (one that can be refilled- 32 oz.)
To that add the following:
1. Sleeping bag (synthetic 20 degree bag suggested)
2. Sleeping pad (closed cell foam or therm-a-rest type pad)
3. Change of clothing (long pants – one pair; T-shirts, socks & underwear – one for each day)
4. Warm clothing- if not in day pack (jacket, stocking cap, gloves)
5. Toilet items (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, small towel, toilet paper)
6. Eating gear (cup, plate & bowl or pie tin, fork, spoon & knife)
7. 2-3 Large black plastic garbage bags (to keep pack etc dry in case of rain)
8. leisure time activity stuff- frisbee, playing cards, etc.
9. NO electronics (gameboy, iPod, cellphone, etc.)
