You can pick up a cheap tent (both quality-wise and price-wise) for about $20-$40 at K-Mart, Wal-Mart, etc.

Overall, these tents are not good. They may get you through a relatively dry weekend, but they don't hold up in the long-run.

A safer bet is to get something from Campmor or Sierra Trading Post. I bought a 2-person Eureka! tent from Campmor in 1999 for $100. I used it daily for two summers as a backpacking guide and it is still in good condition.

Spend a few more bucks and get something that will last. The North Face, Sierra Designs, and Kelty make some great tents too, but you will pay through the nose. Most of them start at $160 for a 2-person tent.

As you can see there is a whole mismatch of prices Every one believes that they are giving you the very best advise, and some will go beyond that and give you a bunch of credentials proving their credibility. The real bottom line is how much do you want to spend and can afford with out putting yourself in the poor house. Like all things the more that you spend the better the quality. (normally) Unless I was in a real hurry I would wait for a local sporting goods store to go out of business and they do quite frequently. I will make a suggestion to you. Reconsider your choice of a single skinned tent and opt for a double skinned tent if you can find one. On cool nights even in the summer time and you get into the tent to go to sleep you are going to find that in a single skinned tent that there will be a lot of condensate build up on the inside of your tent. It may not be raining outside but in might be on the inside. We have camped in the Alps and found this out the hard way. Wait and then pounce when the price is right for your budget.

I actually work in a camping and outdoors store, so the last time I pitched a tent was a couple of months ago. We had to put a 6 man tent on display upstairs. It was quite large, so a couple of coworkers helped in getting it up. If I wasn't taking this question literally, this would sound so wrong... (((Cassie)))

you can hit some good end of the season sales and get great deals. You can get a small tent from LLbean for about $100 and never have to buy a tent ever again, lifetime warranty on everything they sell.

single walled mt tent suitable for expedition use start at around $400(list price) and go way up from there. you might be better using an out fitter to arange your trip rather than buying you owen gear.
