Can I use a pan on a Coleman Camp Grill Stove?

I've just ordered on of these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001P80GCI/ref=oss_product

And wondered if it is okay to heat a pan on the grill side. I can't find any info from someone who's used them a lot, and hear there is a griddle plate in the states you can buy but they don't sell them in the UK. Will it ruin the grill bars if I warm pans on them?

I can tell you from personal experience that you SHOULD NOT use a pan, and particularly not a flat griddle, over the grill portion of this stove. That type of grill is made of a teflon-coated, lightweight aluminum alloy that will melt from the heat build-up when covered with a pan, pot or griddle. I have the model stove and the first time I used it for breakfast I put a flat griddle over the grill to make pancakes. All seemed well until I took off the griddle to clean-up and discovered the grill underneath had melted spectacularly. The entire middle of the grill was gone, surrounding edges bent down, and large blobs of melted metal collected in the bottom of the stove.

This was of some inconvenience as I was in the middle of nowhere in the Adirondacks (NY State) on private land for a long weekend of camping and off-roading. Fortunately, a nearby general store had a small stainless steel campfire grill I was able to cut-down to size and use for the rest of my outing.

I called Coleman and they told me the instructions explain that you should not use the grill as an additional stove burner. I countered that with such a simple appliance, one does not typically read the instructions and that warning labels should be on the package and stove. They agreed and sent me a new grill at no charge. I also ordered the optional Coleman flat griddle that replaces the grill. This makes it the ideal single cooking appliance for car camping trips.

Edit: I'm not the only person who had their grill melt. See link below.

If they are teflon coated, it may wear off the teflon over time, but just be gentle and it should be ok. Another solution could be to use a piece of aluminum foil between the grill and pan. This will hurt the heat conduction slightly, but will protect the teflon on the grill.

EDIT: I can tell you that if my grill MELTED because it got too hot, I would be pissed and take that P.O.S. back where I bought it!

sure you can, it's just propane, like used in many houses throughout the UK. even the small stove on the side would do for pots and smaller pans.

You certainly can. However, it will take considerably longer to heat your pan and cooking time will be longer.
