I am going to go with my cousin to a decent sized lake in New York in May. there are campsites available (I'm brining a decent sized tent) but I am unsure what to bring. This is what I have so far pillows/sleeping bags, flashlights, fishing poles (duh), water, cereal/canned food/chips/other foods, bug spray (even though I don't think its bad there), maybe my guitar, fishing tackle etc.

what else should I bring?

Look up the 10 essentials...

Garbage Bags to pack out your trash and to pick up any you may come across...I like to leave it better than I found it

matches/fire starter, map/compass, whistle or some other signaling device, a knife or multitool, first aid kit, raingear-it is may so it`ll probably be raining, Can opener- dont forget this or you wont be eating much. Pliers with a wire cutter to cut the barb if your cousin hooks himself, What about stuff to clean and cook the fish...Fillet knife lemon butter pinch of seasoning and foil. Better off having it and not using it then wanting it and not having it. Rope-preferably 550 paracord, large stuff sack to put your food/trash/smellables into and then hang it in a tree...bears may not be a problem but raccoons can ruin your trip just as easily. Sun glasses/hat, maybe you`ll need a small grill or stove. Vital kit (Fork Knife Spoon), A camera to validate your fish stories, a ground pad to sleep on.

Keep in mind what end of the lake you are on. Weather patterns generally come from West to East direction. If you are on that eastern bank of the lake you`re going to get blasted by any wind coming off that cold lake. You will be more sheltered from the wind and rain if you were on the Western bank. Also, south facing slopes (if any present) are typically warmer since they are in the sun longer. But then again the wind may help keep the bugs down but casting into the wind sucks. Check the weather before you leave

What lake are you staying at?

what lake?? i know most NYS lakes....you would be surprised with bugs though, even in may they start hatching and can eat you alive..i would recommend getting one of those mesh headnets to keep bugs away, trust me--they're a lifesaver..i once camped on an adirondack lake on memrial day weekend and we were all eaten alive by mosquitoes--we looked like we had chicken pox we were so bittn up...also

plenty of firewood as they time of year can be very damp so anything off the ground will be wet still most likely
